His Own Special People: Christian Ethics - Everything for God’s Glory (AM)

Matthew 5:13-16; 1 Corinthians 10:31-32

Introduction:

1.    As we bring our now kingdom-oriented hearts and transformed minds to mold our morals and ethics, one last overarching principle is critical for success.

2.    In the absence of specific instructions for every possible decision, we must set our minds to glorify God in every choice we make.

Discussion:

       I.    The Principle of Glorification

A.    We cannot isolate from the world (John 17:14-16).

B.     We are to influence the world by bringing glory to God in our every action (Matthew 5:13-16; Philippians 2:12-16; 1 Corinthians 10:30-31; 1 Peter 2:11-12).

     II.    The Principle of Doubt

A.    What if we cannot be sure of a certain action?

B.     Though such matters are rare, the Bible speaks plainly about this matter.

1.    First, we examine everything carefully (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21; 1 John 4:1ff).

2.    Second, if we are unsure a thing is right, we abstain (Romans 14:22-23; 10:17; Colossians 3:17).

III.    The Principle of Mutual Protection

A.    The need for ethical certainty extends to others.

B.     We must avoid causing others to stumble in:

1.    Matters involving legitimately wrong deeds (Matthew 18:6-9; Mark 9:42-48; Luke 17:1-2).

2.    Matters where a deed may embolden another to act despite their doubts (Romans 14:13-21; 1 Corinthians 8:9-12; 10:23-24, 30-33).

Conclusion:

1.    Thankfully, most Christian ethics are easily discerned (Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 5:15-17).

2.    Even those difficult matters are simplified by the plain principles above.

3.    Rather than ask if something is a salvation issue, let us simply ask if it glorifies God.

 Further Food for Thought

1. Have you ever wrestled with the propriety of a potential action?

2. How have you gone about working through that uncertainty?

3. How much thought have you given to the impact on others around?
