Getting to Know God: His Omniscience (AM)

Psalm 139:1-6; 147:5

Introduction:

1. This third “omni” of God is closely connected to the others.

2. Again, the aim of this discussion is a closer walk with our great God.

Discussion:

I. Its Meaning

A. From the Latin omni- all and scire- to know: all knowing

B. “Having infinite awareness, understanding, and insight; possessed of universal or complete knowledge” (Webster)

C. “By this we mean God’s perfect and eternal knowledge of all things which are objects of knowledge” (H. Leo Boles).

II. Its Scope in Scripture

A. He knows every aspect of the created order (Job 38-41):

1. He numbers and names the stars (Psalms 147:4).

2. He knows every creature (Psalms 50:11; Matthew 6:26; 10:29).

3. The hairs of our heads are numbered (Luke 12:7).

B. He knows every event past, present, and future (Isaiah 46:10; 44:28-45:4; 1 Kings 13:1-2; 2 Kings 23:15-18; Ephesians 3:10-11, etc.).

C. He knows our deeds and our thoughts (Psalms 33:13-15; Ecclesiastes 12:14; Hebrews 4:13; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Revelation 20:12; Ezekiel 11:5; Jeremiah 11:20; 17:10; 20:12; John 2:24-25; Mark 2:6-8).

D. This does not mean He predetermined all things (1 Samuel 23:1-14).

III. Its Practical Implications

A. God’s omniscience guarantees none will be absent in the judgment (John 5:28-29; Revelation 20:11-15).

B. It guarantees the perfect accuracy of that judgment (Ecclesiastes 12:14; Luke 12:1-2; Romans 2:5-8, 16; 1 Corinthians 4:5; 2 Corinthians 5:10).

C. It guarantees His providential care (Matthew 6:7-8, 31-33).

Conclusion:

1. This is another mind-bending characteristic of God.

2. Such should prompt awe, gravity, and gratitude in our approach.

3. God knows our thoughts and deeds; let us think and act accordingly.
