From Sinner to Saint: Growth Stunters - Suffering and Fatigue (AM)

Hebrews 10:32-39; Revelation 2:8-11; 3:7-13; Galatians 6:9

Introduction:

1. We mere mortals are beset with various weaknesses, whether we like it or not.

2. Suffering can lead to fatigue which can stunt growth or kill our faith entirely.

3. This discussion seeks to solidify our hearts and minds against these dangers.

Discussion:

I. The Present Reality of Suffering

A. Though the blood of Jesus exempts the faithful from eternal suffering, nothing exempts us from suffering the griefs and sorrows of life in a fallen world.

B. Adding to the pressure, suffering comes in many forms: illness, economic concerns, mistreatment, shame of past failures, death of loved ones, loved ones falling away, etc.

II. The Risk of Fatigue from Suffering

A. The Hebrews were at risk of crumbling under suffering’s weight (Hebrews 10:32-39).

B. The church at Smyrna was facing tribulation, poverty, slander, imprisonment, and potentially death at the hands of evil men (Revelation 2:8-10a).

C. Likewise, the church at Philadelphia faced trials beyond their power (Revelation 3:7-8).

D. Every encounter with suffering of any form takes a toll on us; this is why the Scriptures say so much about endurance, a term implying suffering difficulty.

III. Catalysts for Endurance

A. Knowing this in advance, we must prepare for it (Ephesians 6:10-11; 1 Thessalonians 3:3).

B. Thankfully, the Lord has given us all we need to endure if we:

1. Recognize that suffering is common to all (1 Corinthians 10:13a; 1 Peter 5:9).

2. Trust that He will provide a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13b; 1 Peter 5:10; 2 Peter 1:3).

3. Find strength in solidarity (John 15:18-21; Acts 5:41; 2 Timothy 2:3; 1 Peter 2:19-25; 4:13).

4. Rest in God’s ultimate, eternal deliverance (Hebrews 10:35-39; Revelation 2:10-11; 3:10-12).

Conclusion:

1. We must be clear-eyed about the certainty of difficulty on earth.

2. The eternal rest He gives the faithful must compel us to overcome weariness and fatigue, knowing heaven will surely be worth it all (1 Corinthians 15:58; 2 Corinthians 4:13-18; Galatians 6:9).

Further Food for Thought

1. Has your growth ever been, or is it now being stunted by suffering and fatigue?

2. How can we as your spiritual family help you regain your spiritual vigor?
