Do What Makes You Holy: Commitment Over Comfort - Touching the Untouchables (AM)

Matthew 9:9-13

Introduction:

1. People are much like water; we typically take the path of least resistance.

2. In many areas of life, this is acceptable, or even helpful in a utilitarian sense.

3. In our Christian walk, however, it is sinful and deadly to souls.

Discussion:

I. Our Universal Responsibility

A. The Great Commission demands we share the gospel with any who will hear (Mark 16:15).

B. The gospel demands we love, serve, and edify every soul in our sphere of influence (Matthew 22:37-40; Romans 12:9-16; Galatians 6:10; 1 Thessalonians 5:15).

II. Surety of Discomfort

A. This responsibility shoves us out of our comfort zones and assures distressful situations.

B. Outsiders often balk at truth (John 15:18-21).

C. Brethren sometimes reject truth and turn on the truth-teller too (Acts 10-11; Galatians 2:11-14 4:16).

D. Comfort encourages us to abandon the mission.

III. Touching the Untouchables

A. Jesus constantly caught flak from religious leaders for touching the untouchables (Matthew 9:9-13; Luke 5:13; 7:36-50; 15:1-2; 19:7).

B. Holiness, properly understood, is imitation of our holy Lord (1 Corinthians 11:1; Ephesians 5:1ff).

C. This demands we too touch the untouchables.

Conclusion:

1. The thrust of all we have seen above is that, no matter how uncomfortable it may make us, we must sow the seed of the kingdom on every piece of soil we can.

2. May we never be high-minded but always associating with the lowly (Romans 12:16).
