1 Peter 5:8-11
Introduction:
1. A quick review of the blessings we have examined is in order:
a. Redemption in Christ through His blood (Romans 3:21-26)
b. Dead to sin, alive to God in Christ (Romans 6:1-14)
c. Triumphant in Christ (2 Corinthians 2:14-17)
d. No longer condemned (Romans 8:1-5)
e. Brought near to God and His people (Ephesians 2:11-22)
2. All of these are part of God’s calling us in Christ to eternal glory.
Discussion:
I. The Setting of the Declared Blessing
A. 1 Peter is all about faith under fire (1 Peter 1:6-7; 2:19-21; 4:12-19).
B. Peter sought to fortify their faith that they may endure.
II. The Call to Action (1 Peter 5:8-9)
A. Peter often called his readers to live out and defend the faith despite the pressure (2:11-12, 18-21; 3:13-17; 4:12-19; 5:8-9).
B. Spiritual watchfulness is imperative in face of Satan’s attacks (5:8).
C. We must resist him with a steadfast faith (5:9; Ephesians 6:11-13; James 4:7).
D. We need a motivation that makes the struggle worthwhile.
III. The Promises of God in Christ (1 Peter 5:10-11)
A. Peter assured those who suffered that God would:
1. Perfect them: literally repair, restore, mend, render sound, complete
2. Establish them: stand immovable, make stable, render constant
3. Strengthen them: He is our strength (Ephesians 6:10)
4. Settle them: lay the foundation, ground, establish, render firm
B. Though called to suffer for a little while, the reward is eternal glory in Christ Jesus (cf. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18; Hebrews 12:1-2).
Conclusion:
1. We cannot escape the reality of suffering in this world but suffering for the cause of Christ is not like other suffering.
2. Thankfully, the call to eternal glory in Christ Jesus remains, so we may rest assured in the eternal weight of glory that awaits (2 Corinthians 4:17).
3. Let us therefore serve Him faithfully despite the pressure knowing that our labor is not in vain in the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:58).
