2 Thessalonians 2:9-12
Introduction:
1. Any attempt to live uprightly demands that uprightness be identified.
2. This puts Christianity in conflict with the world because the world argues that truth is in a state of flux, different from person to person, or it does not exist at all.
Discussion:
I. Objective Truth
A. Truth, properly defined, is that which corresponds with reality (Oxford languages).
B. This is the meaning applied in the Bible (Psalms 119:160; Luke 1:1-4; John 8:31-32; 17:17).
C. Relativism denies the possibility that truth may be objective, true for all people, but God is clear He does not present different truths to different people (Acts 10:34-35).
II. Absolute Truth
A. The general relativist idea in this vein is that what once may have been true is not necessarily true anymore or that truth changes with the prevailing circumstances.
B. The Bible is clear we have two choices to make concerning moral/ethical/religious matters (Joshua 24:15; Psalms 1:1-4; Matthew 7:13-14; 6:24; Romans 2:5-11; Galatians 1:6-9).
III. Knowable Truth
A. Another layer of relativism is the concept that truth, if it did exist, is unknowable.
B. This is thoroughly antibiblical, and it does not accord with reality.
C. Scripture is clear that not only can we know the truth, but if we would be free from sin and its consequences, we must know it (John 8:31-32; Ephesians 5:17; 1 Timothy 2:4).
IV. Followable Truth
A. Others may recognize all the above but think the truth is beyond implementation.
B. The demands of the truth include that it must be revered and obeyed (Matthew 7:21; Luke 6:46; Hebrews 5:9; 1 Peter 1:22).
C. God does not put unattainable expectations on His people (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Conclusion:
1. As we move forward with this series, may we do so with renewed love for the truth.
2. Those who do not love the truth are in grave danger (Romans 1:18ff; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-13).
Further Food for Thought
1. Does this upside-down world’s confusion ever discourage you in your Christian walk?
2. Do you find comfort knowing Christianity has always existed in an upside-down world?
3. How can we facilitate better equipping each member to defend the truth of Scripture?
