From Sinner to Saint: Conforming to His Image - The Model, The Means, and The Motivation (AM)

1 John 2:1-6; 2:28-3:3

Introduction:

1. With the overarching goal of transformation into His image in the forefront of our minds, we turn to the things needed to execute that goal.

2. We will consider three key elements necessary to this execution.

Discussion:

I. The Model Displayed

A. We need to bring two of Jesus’ characteristics to the fore if we seek to emulate Him.

1. His self-sacrificial loyalty to the Father and His will (Matthew 4:1-11; 26:36-6; Hebrews 5:7-9; John 4:34; 5:30; 6:38; 9:4-5; 10:17-18; Hebrews 10:6-10; Philippians 2:5-8).

2. His undying love for humanity (Matthew 9:36; Mark 6:34; Luke 19:10; Romans 5:6-11).

B. Every other characteristic of Jesus flows out of these two (cf. Matthew 22:36-40).

II. The Means Provided

A. With such a lofty Model to follow, we must have means beyond ourselves.

B. Thankfully, the Lord provided this in the gospel of Christ by which we:

1. May partake of His righteousness/divine nature (Romans 1:16-17; 2 Peter 1:3-4).

2. Walk by the Spirit rather than the flesh (Romans 8:1-4).

3. Crucify self and let Christ live in us through faith (Galatians 2:20).

4. We become God’s children, not sin’s slaves (Romans 6:1-7, 12-18; Galatians 4:3-4).

III. The Motivation Presented

A. John set forth three motivations to abide in Him and practice righteousness.

1. Confidence at His appearance (1 John 2:28-29).

2. God’s remarkable love empowering our adoption (1 John 3:1-2a; 2 Corinthians 5:14).

3. Full transformation into Jesus’ likeness in the end (1 John 3:2b; Philippians 3:20-21).

B. All who have this hope cleanse themselves day-by-day (1 John 3:3).

Conclusion:

1. Our aim is lofty, for sure, but we need not let it be daunting to us.

2. God has sent the Model, provided the means, and given us sufficient motivation to succeed.

Further Food for Thought

1. Does the height of the bar set intimidate or motivate you in your pursuit of Christlikeness?

2. Does the recognition of God’s provisions help lower any anxiety about the task?

3. How can we work together to help each member of the body thrive in this pursuit?
