Doers (PM)

Scripture Reading:  James 1:21–27

Introduction

A.  James encourages the scattered tribes of Israel to be “doers of the word,” not just “hearers only” (James 1:21–27).

B.  The imagery use here is that of people at a performance, where some work diligently while the audience sits and enjoys the show.

Discussion

I.  In the Lord’s church today, there is a great need for doers.

A.  Jesus called for doers (Matthew 7:21–27).

B.  Doers have a great effect on the church (Acts 4: 36, 11:26).

C.  Without doers in the church, there would be little teaching, little fellowship, little evangelism, and little spirit in our worship.

II.  What does a doer do?

A.  A doer monitors himself daily (James 1:22–25).

B.  A doer bridles his tongue (James 1:26).

C.  A doer helps his brethren in need (James 1:27a).

D.  A doer keeps himself unspotted (James 1:27b, Romans 12:2).

E.  A doer listens to God’s Word and seeks to fulfill it (cf. Ezra 7:10).

III.  What does one have to do to be a doer?

A.  Find a doer, and do what he is doing (Titus 2:4–6).

B.  Find out for yourself what God would have you to do, and do it will all your heart (Colossians 3:17, 23–24).

C.  Look for opportunities to serve.

Conclusion

A.  Jesus showed that sins of omission will be just as detrimental to ours souls as will sins of commission (Matthew 25:41–46).

B.  When it comes to God’s Word, are you a hearer or a doer?
