What Must I Do?

Scripture Reading: Matthew 19:16-17   |   Spanish/Español

Introduction

A. In our study of Jesus’ words on salvation, we have seen that God wants all to be saved (Matthew 18:14), but that we must surrender our lives in order to win them (Matthew 16:25).

B. When asked specifically what one must do to have eternal life, Jesus said that one must love the Lord with his all (Luke 10:25-28) and keep the Father’s commandments (Matthew 19:16-17).

Discussion

I. Jesus says that we must believe in order to be saved.

A. Jesus tells us that faith is a universal requirement for salvation (John 3:16; 4:13-14; 5:24).

B. Anyone who refuses to believe in Jesus will surely perish (John 8:24; Mark 16:16).

C. The faith of which Jesus spoke is the faith that realizes that He is our only hope (Luke 7:47-50) and that trusts in His ability to save us (Matthew 9:22; Mark 10:52).

II. What other requirements for salvation did Jesus name?

A. Jesus says that we must confess Him (Matthew 10:32-33).

B. He says that we must repent (Matthew 4:17; Luke 13:1-5).

C. According to Jesus, salvation requires baptism (Mark 16:16).

D. According to Jesus, salvation also requires perseverance (Matthew 10:22; 24:13).

Conclusion

A. Jesus’ requirements of faith, confession, repentance, baptism, and faithfulness are the same as those taught by the apostles that He sent forth under the Great Commission.

B. Have you been obedient to Jesus’ words regarding salvation?
