Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 13:11

Introduction

A. When Jesus told His disciples He was going to the father, He promised to send the Comforter to them (John 14:16, 26).

B. When Paul had so many troubles that he “despaired even of life” (2 Corinthians 1:8), he was still able to find comfort.

C. Where can we go to find comfort in this troubled world?

Discussion

I. We can find comfort in God’s strength.

A. There are times we need to be reminded of how weak we are (2 Corinthians 1:8–9; 5:1–2; 12:9).

B. Although we cannot save ourselves, God can (2 Corinthians 10:4; 1:9–10; 2 Timothy 4:16–18; Colossians 1:13; 1 Thessalonians 1:10).

C. Even greater is the fact that God can use us (Acts 9:15; 2 Corinthians 4:6–10).

II. We can also find comfort in God’s word.

A. Paul obviously found comfort in the Scriptures (Romans 15:4–6; cf. 1 Thessalonians 4:18).

B. We can find comfort in God’s promises (Acts 18:9–10; 23:11; 27:23–25; 2 Corinthians 7:1; 1 Timothy 4:8).

C. Perhaps the greatest comfort of all is the promise of heaven (2 Corinthians 5:1; Revelation 21:4).

D. We will be able to weather the storms of life (Matthew 7:24–27).

A. Unlike the fleeting comforts of this world, the comforts that God gives us can never been taken away.

B. If you want to know what true comfort is, come to Jesus, and He will give you rest for your troubled soul (Matthew 11:28–30).
