The Benefits of Prayer

Introduction

A. When our most fervent prayers seem to be going unheeded, we might wonder if God is even listening at all (Psalm 22:1-2), even though we know that God never abandons the faithful (vs. 24).

B. The fact is that there are many things that cannot be obtained by any means other than prayer. May we never neglect this great gift!

Discussion

I. What did Jesus gain by prayer?

A. He saw it as a means of obtaining strength (Luke 22:31-32,40; Matthew 26:41; 17:20-21).

B. Jesus gained valuable wisdom through prayer (Luke 6:12; cf. James 1:5-8).

C. Jesus found refuge in prayer during times of distress, just as we can (Mark 11:15-17).

D. Jesus could obtain protection through prayer (Matthew 26:52-53), and so can we (Matthew 24:20; 2 Timothy 4:17-18).

II. There is much for us to gain through prayer.

A. We can get help where we need it the most (Matthew 9:37-38).

B. We can secure God’s deliverance in times of temptation (Matthew 6:13; Mark 14:38).

C. We can find God’s forgiveness (Matthew 6:12; Acts 8:21-22).

D. Many have been directed to the truth after much fervent prayer (Acts 9:11; 10:4-6).

Conclusion

A. Prayer is one of the most powerful tools we have at our disposal for keeping the flesh in check (Matthew 26:41).

B. If you need strength, wisdom, or comfort, don’t forget to pray!
