Life in the Trenches: Battling Discouragement (AM)

1 Kings 19:1-18

Introduction:

1. One of Satan’s favorite weapons against us is that of discouragement.

2. One reason is that every person is susceptible to this attack.

3. Furthermore, he can use people that we least expect to deploy the weapon.

Discussion:

I. Dangers of Discouragement

A. Discouragement is a threat to every aspect of our Christian lives; by definition, it means a loss of confidence or enthusiasm (Oxford Languages).

B. Discouragement can paralyze us in our service to God as with Elijah (1 Kings 19), and it can even taint our perception of God and thwart our desire to serve Him (Psalms 73).

II. Causes of Discouragement

A. This is where discouragement is such a versatile weapon for our adversary.

B. Different people are discouraged by different things, often unknown until they occur.

1. Fear (1 Kings 19:1-7).

2. Loneliness (1 Kings 19:8-14)

3. Loss of or harm to loved ones (Philippians 2:27).

4. Inequities (Psalms 73:1-16)

5. Guilt and shame (2 Corinthians 2:3-8)

III. Overcoming Discouragement

A. Thankfully, the Lord has provided the means of overcoming discouragement.

B. It involves right attitudes and actions from the discouraged and those around them.

1. Always stay close to God (1 Kings 19:15; Psalms 73:17; James 4:7-8).

2. Trust Him to deliver (Exodus 14:13-14; 1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Timothy 4:18; Hebrews 13:5-6).

3. Exchange encouragement with God’s people (Romans 12:15-16; Hebrews 3:13; 10:24-25).

4. Be thankful and never envious because our treasures are heavenly and eternal (Psalms 73:17-28; Matthew 5:43-48; 20:1-16; 6:19-21; 1 Peter 1:3-9).

Conclusion:

1. Every one of us will face discouragement at some point, but we cannot give up.

2. We must not lose sight of the crown of life that awaits (2 Timothy 4:8; James 1:12; Revelation 2:10).
